‘NCIS’: How Gibbs’ Absence Influences Kasie’s Major Decision (RECAP)

Mark Harmon’s last on-screen appearance may have been in the fourth episode of NCIS Season 19, but his absence is still felt four episodes later — especially by forensic scientist Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover).

Kasie has been attending Krav Maga classes for nine weeks, a fact she doesn’t reveal until the case leads agents Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) and Alden Parker (Gary Cole) to the same gun salon she is. Yes, she admits to Knight that she is considering purchasing a firearm. (We adore their friendship, which reminds us of Abby and Kate’s in the early seasons.)

It’s been on her mind, she admits, since serial-turned-contract-k1ll3r Paul Lemere (Jason Wiles) held her hostage in “Nearly Departed,” which followed her and Brian Dietzen’s Dr. Jimmy Palmer being held hostage in the diner in Season 17’s “Blarney,” (Considering how serious both situations were and the circumstances surrounding them — plus the fact that not much time has passed between them and the nature of her job, which doesn’ She assumed her “brush with mortality” had no effect on her, but it did. She was intrigued after hearing about the gun salon, but having a gun on the nightstand “is there to keep me safe, but maybe it just reminds me of what I’m afraid of,” she tells Knight.

But it’s to Palmer that she reveals why she’s seriously considering purchasing a gun right now. She wonders, WWGS (What Would Gibbs Say?). “I think he’d say take a deep breath, you can be conflicted while shopping,” he says. Because of the bullets he’s pulled from people over the years, the medical examiner doesn’t own a gun. Kasie is leaning against Palmer’s side, but she is terrified. “I was saved by Gibbs both times, so it’s on me when strike three occurs,” she explains. She had never been concerned before. Palmer believes she simply needs more time to heal.

Kasie then asks Parker for his opinion. He’s never wished he didn’t own a gun, but there are some people he wishes he didn’t. According to her, her uncle shot an intruder once and it haunted him for the rest of his life. She’s not sure how any of this will help her return to normalcy.

So, what happens at the end of the episode when Knight takes Kasie to the shooting range? “It feels better than I expected,” Kasie says, but she’s not going to get a gun. “I’m fine. I wouldn’t mind returning now and then to let off some steam.”

As a result, Gibbs — or rather, the absence of Gibbs — continues to loom large on NCIS. What are your thoughts on that?…
