The Friends reunion is quickly approaching, and many fans are eager to see the show’s stars and a few notable guest stars reunite on-screen. Tom Selleck, whose character on the hit NBC sitcom The Office made quite an impression, is one of the actors who will appear in the special.
On the show, Selleck played a doctor who was 20 years older than his love interest, Monica Geller (played by Courteney Cox). Selleck and Cox actually have a similar age difference in real life. So, when he first appeared on Friends, how old was Selleck?
On ‘Friends,’ Tom Selleck portrayed Dr. Richard Burke.
During Season 2, Selleck made his first appearance on Friends in the episode “The One Where Ross and Rachel… You Know.” He portrayed Dr. Richard Burke, an ophthalmologist who falls in love with Monica Geller after she caters a party for him.
Eventually, the two start dating and get serious enough to talk about having children together. Unfortunately, Richard and Monica’s romance does not last because of their 20-year age difference and disagreement over having children.
Despite Richard’s numerous attempts to reconcile with Monica, she ultimately rejects him and continues to be in a relationship with Chandler (Matthew Perry).
Selleck appeared in ten of the show’s 236 episodes as Dr. Richard Burke. His first appearance on the show was in 1996. He was 51 years old at the time.
Selleck, like his character, was a few years older than his on-screen love interest Cox, who was only 32 years old at the time.
Tom Selleck is referred to as the “seventh friend” by Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, and Courteney Cox.
Despite the fact that he was only on the show for a short time, Selleck quickly became a fan favorite. While the actor was adored by the live studio audience and fans at home, the cast was also a big fan of the Blue Bloods star.
During an interview with Access to promote their upcoming HBO Max reunion, Cox, Jennifer Aniston, and Lisa Kudrow were asked to name some of their favorite guest stars from their hit sitcom series over the years.
Of course, Selleck was one of the many guest stars mentioned by the women, who regard him as their “seventh friend.”
“It’s Tom Selleck. Cox described her as “so incredibly…the sweetest.”
Access Hollywood’s Kit Hoover chimed in, “I think he counts as the seventh friend.”
Aniston added, “He and Paul Rudd.” “I’d say we’re on the verge of becoming the seventh friend.”
Tom Selleck will appear in the ‘Friends’ reunion.
HBO Max announced on May 13 that the long-awaited Friends reunion will be released on May 27. The original cast will be joined by a slew of high-profile guest stars, including Selleck.
Selleck told People in April 2020 that he hadn’t been asked to participate in the reunion, but that he would gladly reunite with his former co-stars if the opportunity arose.
Now that it’s been confirmed that Selleck will appear in the Friends reunion special, he can relive the camaraderie and fun he had on the original Friends set, which he describes as “a great place to work.”
